Spice Storage Ideas – Simple Ways to Bring Order to Your Kitchen

I love cooking – and not just one type of cuisine. From German classics to Turkish, Middle Eastern, and even Korean dishes… I use a lot of spices.

The result: For years I had zero system. Spice packets everywhere, crumbs on the countertop, and honestly… it wasn’t very hygienic either.

At some point I finally took the time to sort through everything and start organising spices in a way that actually works. Here are the best spice-storage ideas that truly make a difference.

Why Proper Spice Storage Matters

If you keep your spices in opened packets or random boxes, it can get messy fast – and unhygienic. Open bags or torn packaging will leave spice dust everywhere.

And to be completely honest: I once had tiny bugs in my spice drawer. They had chewed through the packaging – especially cumin. Definitely not something I want to deal with again.

Where (and how) to store spices

Spices prefer a cool, dry and dark environment. That means:

  • Not next to the stove – rising heat ruins the aroma
  • Not above the dishwasher – too much moisture
  • And not in direct sunlight

One of the best solutions I found blends perfectly into any kitchen design and keeps the jars protected from heat and moisture. Ideal especially when looking for spice storage ideas for small spaces.

A little unusual but genius: I freeze large spice quantities. Bulk bags of cumin or chili flakes stay fresh forever in airtight freezer bags. Just make sure they’re sealed really well.

Mason Jars – a simple temporary solution

For a long time I used old jam jars. They work, but:

  • They’re too big for small spice amounts
  • They take up a lot of space
  • And visually… not the prettiest

Still better than keeping torn packets everywhere, so if you already have jars at home, it’s a quick fix.

Small Countertop Spice Boxes

These are my absolute favorites: small spice boxes with individual compartments for everyday spices like salt, pepper, paprika, and cumin. Most even come with a tiny spoon.

They look neat, you don’t have to dig through drawers, and they can even be decorative depending on the design.

Large Spice Jars or Canisters – practical & stylish

If you like your kitchen to look clean and coordinated, bigger glass or porcelain spice jars are perfect. Many sets also include matching jars for coffee, tea, or sugar.

They’re ideal for spices you reach for every single day.

Rotating Spice Racks – space-saving & super handy

I bought a rotating spice rack and honestly… best decision. Mine holds 10 spice jars – perfect for the basics. It looks decorative, and it’s so satisfying to just spin it and see everything at once.

You can find modern black versions, light wooden Scandinavian styles, or more playful designs. There are even large racks with 20 jars.

The biggest advantage: they save so much counter space.

Spice Shelves – if you have lots of spices

If you own as many spices as I do, you’ll eventually need a proper spice shelf. Wall-mounted, inside a cabinet, or even special racks for the inside of the fridge door – all of them help keep dozens of spices organized and visible.

Pull-Out Spice Cabinets – premium level

A pull-out spice cabinet is next-level organization. It looks like part of your kitchen furniture and holds a huge amount of spices while staying sleek and minimal. A beautiful gift idea for home cooks, too.

Storing Spices in Drawers

If you have an empty drawer, use it! With small jars, baskets, or spice inserts, you can keep everything neat without loose powder everywhere.

I use decorative baskets so the jars stay upright – simple and effective. Add labels on the lids and you’ll find everything instantly.

Magnetic Spice Jars

An idea I got from my mum: magnetic spice jars on a metal strip. They hang upside down or sideways, saving tons of space and giving your kitchen a cool “restaurant vibe.”

Just make sure you use airtight jars and strong magnets.

More Storage Ideas

I always keep a few empty small jars at home, in case I buy a new spice or need to transfer an opened packet.

Better prepared than messy!

The Best System (that actually works)

Here’s a simple setup that keeps everything organized:

  • Everyday spices: in a spice box, rotating rack, or countertop jars
  • Less-used spices: in small jars in a drawer or cabinet
  • Bulk spices: in larger airtight jars – or even frozen
