5 Trends You (Probably) Will Regret in 5 Years

Design trends come and go, but some look great in photos and feel tiring in everyday life. We took a honest look at popular 2026 trends many are embracing now – and why they might not feel as good in your home long-term.

Trend 1: Overdone Earthy and Bold Color Schemes

balanced color interior design

2025 has brought warm earthy palettes like terracotta, sage green, ochre and mustard tones into interiors. These rich hues aim to add character and warmth.

This feels great at first because it breaks away from generic neutrals. But when entire rooms lean heavily into one color family, it can start to feel heavy and dated fast.

Minimal accents or intentional pops are one thing. Walls, floors, furniture, textiles all in the same saturated spectrum can feel visually exhausting over time and we can already see these trends being boring-vintage in some years.

Trend 2: Boneless Couches That Don’t Support You

Low, foam-only sofas and “boneless” seating are trending for their laid-back vibe and Instagram appeal.

They look casual and cozy, but in everyday use they can lack back support and shape. That’s fine for a weekend chill zone, but after years of use the comfort trade-off becomes obvious.

A sofa that looks good and feels comfortable should be one investment you don’t regret.

Trend 3: Painting Floors or Embracing Extreme Surface Statements

From ceilings to now even floors being treated as dramatic design surfaces, 2026 pushes bold statements.

Painting floors or turning every surface into a feature may be eye-catching. But real life means wear, scratches, and constant foot traffic. What looks expressive now might start to feel visually overwhelming and impractical.

Tip: Design with a feature in mind, not an entire canvas.

Trend 4: Cluttercore and the Beauty of Too Much

minimal decor intentional space

Cluttercore is one of the most talked-about interior movements – homes filled with layered shelves, collected objects, nostalgic pieces, and “organized chaos” that feels deeply personal.

But to be honest it is a trend we might want to leave behind in 2026.

What reads as character online can feel overwhelming in daily life. When every surface is styled and every corner holds something to look at, the space loses its sense of calm. Over time, the visual noise can start to feel heavy rather than expressive.

Trend 5: LED Strip Lighting Everywhere

LED strip lighting has moved far beyond subtle accents. It’s under beds, behind headboards, inside shelving, under kitchen islands, along ceilings, and especially along staircases. Soft glow, ambient mood, very “modern”.

While lighting stairs is practical and important for nighttime safety, the way it’s done matters. LED strips tucked directly under stair treads already feel overworked. When the light changes colors, the effect becomes even more distracting and far from timeless.

A calmer approach ages better. Simple, wall-mounted step lights* provide enough illumination without turning the staircase into a design statement. The cleaner and quieter the stairs, the more elegant and enduring they tend to feel.

So What Should You Do Instead?

Great design is about choosing what truly supports real life. In five years, you’ll still love spaces that:

  • feel calm instead of chaotic
  • invite comfort without sacrificing support
  • have colour you enjoy long-term, not just right now
  • blend timeless basics with small, intentional updates

The best designs aren’t the ones that look good in a snapshot. They are the ones that still feel right when you walk through the door every day.
